9 FAQs about Automatic Workout Detection

Q1: How do I turn Automatic Workout Detection on or off?

A: You can manage this feature in the app's settings. Go to: Me -> Settings -> Function Management -> and toggle "Automatic Workout Detection."

Q2: I worked out, but nothing was detected. Why?

A: For detection to work, please ensure the following conditions are met:

  • Correct Versions: Your app is updated to V3.11.0, and your ring’s firmware is updated to the latest version (Gen 2: FR02.016, Air: FR04.007).
  • Feature is Enabled: You've already turned the feature on in the settings (see Q1).
  • Workout Duration: You need to do your exercise for at least 10 minutes without stopping. If you stop and start a lot, the system might not see it as a complete workout.
  • Sync Your Data: The detection notification usually shows up about 10-15 minutes after you finish your workout, so you may sync your data. To sync the data from your ring, you must open the app within two days of your workout. If you wait longer, the detection will not be processed.

Q3: Can I edit an automatically detected workout?

A: Yes. Any workout from the last two days can be changed, such as the type of action, RPE intensity, and length of time. The system will instantly update your calories and intensity numbers to reflect your new information.

Q4: What is RPE and why should I edit it?

A: Rate of Perceived Exertion is what RPE stands for. From 1 to 10, rate how hard you thought the workout was. It works better and more accurately than rivals like Oura's simple "easy, moderate, hard" scale. The system gives you an initial RPE based on your heart rate, but the number you enter by hand (1 being easy and 10 being your maximum effort) gives a more accurate picture of how hard you are working. We can get smarter by training our program with this, which also makes the calorie count more accurate.

Q5: How are calories calculated?

A: The number of calories you burn depends on three things: the type of exercise, how long you do it, and your RPE intensity score. The calorie count can't be changed directly, but it will be updated immediately when any of the other three metrics are changed.

Q6: Does this new feature affect the ring's battery life?

A: Yes, there’s a trade-off. Turning on Automatic Workout Detection typically shortens battery life by about one day. Because the ring samples sensors more frequently when it thinks you’re exercising, the longer (and more often) you work out, the more battery it will use. Heavy workout days may drain faster than light or rest days. Consider switching the feature off on rest days or before very long activities if you need maximum runtime.

Q7: How does the ring know the difference between running and cycling?

A: The accelerometer inside the ring records the specific pattern of movement for each exercise. As an example, running has a rhythmic pattern with a lot of force, while cycling is smoother and has a different cadence. The system looks at these trends, along with the activity's length and intensity, to figure out what it is. It improves its accuracy over time by learning from the information you give it.

Q8: Are heart rate and calorie tracking more accurate with this feature?

A: Yes. During an automatically detected workout, heart rate monitoring is significantly more accurate compared to the daily monitoring mode. This, in turn, improves the accuracy of the workout calorie calculation.

Q9: Why doesn't the Gen 1 ring support this update?

A: Due to hardware limitations, the RingConn Gen 1 ring can't handle the complex data collection and algorithms needed for this function.
