In 2022, Samsung submitted a patent application related to Smart Rings to the Korean Intellectual Property Information Service. It appears that this patent will soon be introduced into real life.
At an event in January 2024, Samsung showcased its new product, the Galaxy Ring. Then, at the Galaxy Unpacked event in February 2024, Samsung Electronics President TM Roh stated, "We decided to release the ring, which can be worn conveniently for a long time, because we thought it was essential to complete digital health." Although Samsung did not reveal much information about the Galaxy Ring at the event, the prototype of the Samsung Smart Ring on display proved that their efforts have yielded significant results.
What functions does the Samsung Galaxy Ring have?
Samsung Galaxy Ring is equipped with ECG and PPG sensors, allowing it to monitor users' biometric data. It can track users' heart rate, body temperature, blood oxygen saturation, sleep information, and more. This wearable device focuses more on health, and its data tracking functions for sports may be relatively limited, so I don't have high expectations for its sports-related features.
At present, it's uncertain whether the ring supports voice control. Due to its small size, it may be challenging to accommodate too many components, and to ensure battery life, it may only use low-power chips, so I believe it doesn't support voice control.
There are rumors that the Samsung Ring will work in conjunction with Samsung's newly designed virtual reality devices. Therefore, some speculate that the ring will serve as an auxiliary device for action recognition, gesture control, and other functions of virtual reality devices.
When will the Samsung Galaxy Ring be launched?
As for the release date, although there is no specific launch date yet, according to available information, Samsung plans to produce the first batch of 400,000 Galaxy Rings, start mass production of components in May, and release them in July along with the sixth-generation foldable phones, with official sales starting in August.
What is the price of the Samsung Galaxy Ring?
As for the price, Samsung has not yet disclosed the price of the Galaxy Ring. However, other smart ring brands such as RingConn, Oura Ring, and Ultrahuman usually range from $279 to $350. Therefore, we speculate that the price of the Samsung Ring will be between $300 and $400. Of course, there may be different versions of the Ring, but the estimated price range remains the same.
Will Apple release the Apple Ring?
After Samsung's January event, reports emerged suggesting that Apple is also gearing up to launch the Apple Ring. Media reports cited patents obtained by Apple related to ring-shaped devices, leading to speculation that Apple might enter this potentially lucrative market. It's estimated that the Smart Ring market will grow from $20 million in 2023 to $200 million in 2031.
Imagine if there were indeed an Apple Ring, what features would you most look forward to?
Undoubtedly, using the Apple Ring to control devices like AirPods, Vision Pro, and others; controlling other devices through gestures and motion signals, a capability already present in Apple products. But if implemented in the Apple Ring, could we use our fingers as brushes to paint in the world of Vision Pro? The potential for creativity when combining the Apple Ring with Vision Pro is immense.
So, will Apple release a Smart Ring? I believe, at least in the short term, it's unlikely. Existing evidence doesn't strongly indicate that the Apple Ring is imminent; media reports may be speculative. Despite the comfort and suitability of Smart Rings for sleep and health monitoring, Apple doesn't seem to prioritize this currently. Remember, Apple Car was also terminated.
Of course, if Apple decides to pursue this, they could likely launch the Apple Ring within a year, given their accumulated technology from Apple Watch and Apple Health, which would make the process significantly more efficient.
